Nissan Leaf is the car of the year in Europe

The big winner of the car of the year contest is the electric powered model Nissan Leaf, who was named Car of the Year 2011 in Europe by 59 journalists from 23 countries. The following positions are occupied by Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Opel/Vauxhall.

Nissan electric received a total of 257 points, Giulietta, 248 points and Meriva earned 244 points. The top continues with Ford C-Max/Grand C-Max (224 points), Citroen C3/DS3 (175 points), Volvo S60/V60 (145 points) and, finally, Dacia Duster (132 points).

However it should be noted that Dacia Duster is the first romanian vehicle qualified in the final of the competition car of the year which has a history of 46 years. For these reasons, and not only, the romanian SUV has its merits in the success enjoyed by Dacia worldwide.

Final list of seven nominees was very complex, including a SUV (Duster), a van with a rare opening doors system (Meriva) and an electric car (Leaf). Last year, the title “Car of the Year 2010″ was won by the Volkswagen Polo.

The jury that choose Car of the Year 2011 is composed of 59 members from 23 European countries. National representation of each country is directly proportional to the size of industry and automotive markets of their local car. Thus, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Spain each have six members, and Romania one.
